What Happens at a New Patient Dental Check-Up?

 A Warm Welcome

When you arrive, our reception team will greet you, help you check in and answer any questions you may have. If you haven’t completed your medical history forms online, don’t worry, we’ll help you complete these when you arrive.

Getting to Know You

Before your examination begins, your dentist will spend time getting to know you.

We’ll discuss:

  • Your dental and medical history
  • Any concerns or symptoms you’re experiencing
  • Your smile goals
  • Previous dental experiences or anxiety
  • Your diet and lifestyle

This helps us tailor your dental care to your individual needs.

Your Comprehensive Dental Examination

Your dentist will carry out a full oral health assessment, including:

  • Checking your teeth and gums
  • Examining any existing fillings, crowns or dental work
  • Screening for signs of oral cancer
  • Assessing your bite and jaw function

Throughout the appointment, we’ll explain everything clearly, so you understand exactly what’s happening and why.

Do I Need Dental X-Rays at My First Appointment?

If your dentist needs a closer look beneath the surface, we may recommend digital X-rays.

Digital X-rays help us identify problems such as:

  • Early tooth decay
  • Bone loss
  • Hidden infections
  • Other issues that aren’t visible during a routine examination

For most patients, routine X-rays are recommended approximately every two years, although this may vary depending on your individual oral health.

What Is a Digital Dental Scan?

As part of your examination, we’ll complete a digital scan of your upper and lower teeth.

This allows us to:

  • Show you areas that may need extra attention
  • Monitor changes over time
  • Create a digital record of your smile
  • Help you better understand your oral health

You’ll also receive a copy of your scan to review at home.

Will I Receive a Personalised Treatment Plan?

Following your examination, your dentist will discuss their findings and explain any treatment options available.

We’ll cover:

  • Your current oral health
  • Recommended treatment options
  • Costs involved
  • Timescales for treatment

You’ll always can ask questions. We believe the best dental care comes from working together, so it’s important that you fully understand your treatment and feel supported throughout your journey.

Can I Have My Teeth Cleaned at My First Visit?

If your appointment includes a hygiene visit, our hygienist will carry out a professional clean to:

  • Remove plaque and tartar
  • Polish away surface stains
  • Improve gum health
  • Provide personalised brushing, flossing and interdental cleaning advice

Our goal is to help you maintain a healthy smile long after you leave the practice.

What Happens After My Appointment?

Before you leave, our reception team will:

  • Arrange any follow-up appointments
  • Book your next routine examination if required
  • Discuss payment options
  • Help organise any recommended treatment

Our team is always happy to answer any questions, ensuring you leave feeling informed, reassured and confident about your smile.
