What is Prosthodontics?
Prosthodontics is the field of dentistry that relates to rebuilding natural teeth and restoring missing teeth with artificial (prosthetic) replacements.
This may involve a routine procedure such as making a crown for a damaged tooth or it could involve more complex procedures, such as full mouth reconstruction or treating facial deformities. If you’ve recently been in an accident that chipped or broke one or more of your teeth, you would see a prosthodonist. Other possible reasons for damaged teeth include age, disease, and decay. A prosthodontic specialist will help you come up with the best way to restore the function and appearance of your teeth.
Treatments that fall under the care of a prosthodontist include:
- Aesthetic dentistry
- Dental implants
- Crowns and bridges
- Porcelain veneers
- Re-treatment of failing dentistry
- Complete and partial dentures
- Tooth wear
A prosthodontist has graduated from dental school and will have three or more years of additional specialist education.
